6 Ways Art and Science are Related

Updated: Dec 13, 2025

  1. Observation.

If there is something every scientist and artist must have, it is the capacity to observe. In the scientific method, the first step is observation. It is by observing that many of the most important physics laws were discovered. What was Newton doing when the apple fell? He was simply observing. It is by observation, too, that figurative artists can transcribe shapes and feelings onto a 2D surface and create timeless beauty.

  1. Imagination.

One of the main differences between animals and humans, is our capacity to imagine things and events. Imagination makes us intelligent beings and helps us solve problems we have never faced before. After the invention of photography, artists were freed to use their imagination to create an alternative reality. Now, with the invention of AI, artists and scientists have a tool that enhances imagination. Artists have to work to connect humans through art in a period where conciousness and identity have to be redefined.

  1. Creativity.

Creativity begins with imagination. Whether it involves developing a solution to a problem or producing a post-impressionist landscape, the creative process requires hands-on engagement to transform ideas into tangible outcomes. Creativity, therefore, demands both analytical thinking and resilience.

  1. Society.

Art and science both feed from society. They get inspiration from society, and society gets knowledge from both of them. The flow of information and communication between art, science, and society is a requirement for the three of them to exist. Science and art are universal languages that connect humans across cultures and time helping presrve human identity.

  1. Meaning.

They both are trying to find a deeper meaning to our existence and change the perception of the world. Art and science are only successful when they challenge assumptions, disrupting society. Now that society is being disrupted by a major shift in technology, art has to work its way to represent and capture that shift in society. That's why the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) studies area has become so important for the 21st-century challenges. Investment in contemporary culture will be revaluated in the next few decades.

  1. Vision.

Science, and Art have the mission and vision to communicate and pass down knowledge. That's why the fragmentation of knowledge we have been experiencing in the past centuries, where science was considered purely logical and art purely emotional, separating imagination and technical skills, has come to an end. This second quarter of the century will be led by the combination of art and science.
